Science Area: Earth Science

Concept: 4.4 Air is found in every place that is not filled by some other material.

Materials:

Water

Funnel

A plastic bottle

Clay/ masking tape

State Goals:

11.A.1f: Compare observations of individual and group results.

11.A.2d: Use data to produce reasonable explanations.

11.A.1a: Describe an observed event.

Safety Considerations: Be careful not to spill the water in the floor.

Science Process Skills: observing, inferring, and predicting

Procedures:

Place the funnel into the mouth of the plastic bottle.

Seal the neck of the bottle with clay or with masking tape so there is space between the bottle and the funnel.

Pour water into the funnel.

Explanation:

The water will remain into the funnel because the bottle is already full of air. If you poke a hole through the clay air will escape and water will have room to enter the bottle.
